History Timeline
1. Foundational Years:
Labor Pool to PPA - Personnel Pool of America, Inc., Medical Personnel Pool (1946–2000), MyCareer(R) & CareerAmerica:
- 1946: The company was founded in Chicago by Leroy Dettman and Joseph Perfetto under the name City Car Unloaders. Its initial focus was placing manual laborers in temporary jobs loading and unloading cargo.
- 1956: As the business expanded into broader industrial labor, it changed its name to Labor Pool.
- 1966: Recognizing a severe shortage of medical professionals, the company entered the healthcare sector by forming a dedicated division called Medical Personnel Pool. This arm eventually became the first healthcare franchisor in the United States.
- 1975: The industrial and clerical divisions were formally reorganized under the umbrella name Personnel Pool of America, Inc.
2. The H&R Block Era and Expansion (1978–1993)
- 1978: Tax preparation giant H&R Block, Inc. acquired Personnel Pool of America for $22.5 million. H&R Block used its own expertise in managing large seasonal workforces to scale PPA rapidly, taking it from the sixth-largest to the third-largest temporary help firm in the U.S. within two years.
- 1991: H&R Block purchased a rival temporary staffing agency, Interim Systems Corporation, for approximately $45–$49.5 million. On December 31, 1991, Block merged Interim Systems with Personnel Pool of America to create a singular North American staffing powerhouse.
3. Transition to Interim Services & Public Spinoff (1992–1999)
- 1992: The combined entity retired the Personnel Pool name and officially adopted the corporate title Interim Services Inc. The former Medical Personnel Pool division was similarly rebranded as Interim HealthCare.
- 1994: H&R Block chose to focus on its core financial products and spun off Interim Services Inc. into an independent, publicly-traded company on NASDAQ.
- 1997: The company sold off its Interim HealthCare brand to private investors. [1]
4. The Emergence of Spherion (2000–Present)
- 2000: Following a massive $553 million stock merger with the Norrell Corporation in 1999, the corporate entity officially changed its name to Spherion Corporation.
- Modern Status: In 2011, Spherion was acquired by the global recruitment conglomerate Randstad NV. Spherion still actively operates today as a prominent local staffing and recruiting franchise network across the United States
